About the Ecosystem

This is predominantly woody vegetation that develops in depressions in the terrain created by certain particular geological formations. Under these conditions the soil remains almost permanently moist, favouring the development of lush vegetation in which, besides the tree component, there is a layer dominated by ferns and other herbaceous species. These forests occur in Cerro Largo, part of Tacuarembó, Rivera and part of Durazno. Given their connectivity with southern Brazil, they often harbour species characteristic of that region.

Trees on Stilts

The trees in these forests develop aerial roots called "pneumatophores", which emerge from the water like tiny snorkels so they can breathe in waterlogged soils.

Giant Sponges

They work like giant sponges that soak up water when it rains and release it slowly, preventing floods and making sure there is water during droughts.

Unique Amphibians

They are home to frogs and toads that spend their whole lives in the water, with some species so rare that they are found only in these ecosystems.

A large, entirely white bird with a pink bill and an elegant, long-necked flight. The Coscoroba Swan lives in lagoons, marshes, swamps and wetlands. Its main threats are the drainage and degradation of wetlands, human disturbance during breeding and illegal hunting. Protecting wetlands is essential for its survival.

A small bird. The male is a glossy blue-black. It rises and falls in short flights while singing. It inhabits grasslands, open fields and roadsides. Its main threats are the loss of grasslands and the intensive use of agrochemicals. Maintaining grasslands and natural field margins favours its presence.
