Some shrublands are made up of rare or uncommon species, such as those that develop in the west of the country on alkaline soils; in other cases, they perform an important role in protecting the soil, as is the case of those that develop in the hilly areas of the east.

An Ecosystem in Transition

These are dense shrubby formations, typical of transition zones between different types of vegetation. A scrubland can form quickly when the way a site is managed changes, such as when livestock are excluded. In the same way, it can develop into a forest or return to being natural grassland if conditions change. These are dynamic environments that reflect the balance between natural forces and land use.
