About the Ecosystem

These are tall grasslands dominated by large-statured grasses, which build the habitat of specific birds. They are highly susceptible to site management. In some cases they cover large expanses, but in general they are decreasing. Some tall grasslands are used to obtain materials for building thatched roofs ("quinchos"). They are often burnt by livestock farmers to "renew" the pasture.

Home to Unique Birds

Some bird species live exclusively in certain types of tall grasslands, such as the Chestnut Seedeater, which arrives in spring from Brazil and needs tall grasslands of paja mansa in order to feed on its fruits and to nest.

A Threatened Ecosystem

Tall grasslands are declining because of burning to "renew" pastures and because of changes in land use. Some are used to gather materials for building traditional thatched roofs known as "quinchos".
