About the reserve
The presence of such contrasting ecosystems as wetlands, watercourses and flat-topped hills makes this reserve a site of high species richness. It conserves wetlands, grasslands and floodable tall grasslands, flat-topped hills and sandstone ledges, along with species that are a priority for conservation.

ThreatenedA small bird endemic to the region's wetlands and reed beds. The Curve-billed Reedhaunter is characterised by its reddish-brown plumage and its distinctive downward-curved bill, a unique adaptation for feeding among the reeds. It lives exclusively in tall grasslands and marshlands, where it searches for insects and small invertebrates. It is an indicator species for the health of wetlands.
Ubajay rastrero

ThreatenedA native creeping shrub of Uruguay, a wild relative of the common ubajay. The ubajay rastrero grows close to the ground, forming dense green mats. It produces small, edible orange fruits that are highly prized by native wildlife. Its leaves are small, glossy and evergreen. This species is important for soil conservation in hilly and stony areas, and its fruits are eaten by native birds and mammals.
